“Have you heard about floating?” my friend asks. Leaning forward in my chair, I catch Lisa’s excitement about Simply Massage and Wellness flotation sessions. I feel super curious. Her eyes light up as she tells me details. I love new experiences that are relaxing and beneficial, so I probe, “How much?”
“The regular price is $75 for the hour-long session, but the first visit is only $59.”
“Okay. I can do that,” I decide.
Walking into Simply Massage and Wellness a week later, I immediately sense welcome and safety and beauty. It smells good. The natural lighting from the storefront windows illuminates the comfortable sitting area. From behind the natural wood countertop, the attendant moves forward to greet me. Calm and warm and welcoming, she goes over the instructions, I sign a waiver and follow her to the hallway on the left.
Both private float rooms have a changing area, shower, and flotation tank. Prepared on the sitting bench are a plump pyramid of fresh towels and a personal pair of deep orange ear plugs to seal out the water. Mounted on the shower wall are dispensers of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Everything is very clean. Flittering through the glass door from inside the float tank, aqua blue light plays on the pool of water. If I need it, the intercom connects me to the front desk for help.
Inside the room I lock the door to the hall and put in the earplugs. After a quick rinse under the shower, I step through the glass door into the warm pool. The saturation of Epsom salt keeps me completely buoyant as I lie back, and there is plenty of room to stretch out and turn. I play with the light control, turning the aqua to green, yellow, red, violet, white, and even experiment with floating in the dark. The music is soft and calming, then fades and disappears.
I give myself sixty minutes of sensory calm. Reducing gravity, light and sound, I discover relaxation. Removed from people, expectations and chores, I belong to myself. Exhale. No clock, no timer, I let go of micromanaging minutes. I’m floating. I’m okay. Something inside shifts. Then the light turns on. The session is over, but the experience continues. After a warm shower and shampoo, I dress and exit the flotation room. Down the hall across from the bathroom is a hair dryer and mirror with complementary hair products.
Interested in the membership deal, I lock into the $59 for one float a month, understanding I can schedule extra sessions or cancel anytime. Directly across from the flotation room is a lounge, softly lit and lovely, for members to relax in and enjoy for an additional hour after the float. I love this extra value. The lounge offers complementary water, hot tea, a cup of kombucha on tap, trail mix, interesting books and fun toys, like my favorite the Exotic Sands TM oval glass. After the third float I notice the cumulative benefits of quieting my sensory nervous system. I love floating. Every month I sign the guest book, because each float is unique.
Our new website is finally up. We’ve worked hard to get a beautiful new site ready and we’re proud to show it off. Thanks for reading our blog. We have lots of great blog posts in the works. Please check back or contact us now to find out how we can help you.
The only thing anyone with a cold wants, is to feel better. We have all been there–a scratchy throat, pounding head, and that forever-lingering congestion. Many of us can likely remember the smell of vapor rub from childhood; it was in every medicine cabinet. If you are now a mom or dad yourself, you know just how hard it is to see your little ones suffering because of stuffiness. These easy-to-make, petroleum-free shower cubes can help offer relief and break up congestion for anyone–no matter how young or old.
Often times the pediatrician will recommend sitting in the bathroom with little ones with a hot shower going because the steam helps to loosen mucus and open airways. Adding one of these Breathe Easy Shower Cubes makes it even more effective. The vapors from these cubes will work their magic to soothe and have you and your little one breathing easier. ***Please do not leave babies or children unattended.****
These also make for a great get-well-soon gift idea. Nothing shows care and compassion more than a homemade gift. Next time your friend, neighbor, or co-worker starts to look like Rudolf-the-red-nosed-reindeer, whip up a batch of these. They will be sure to thank you!
Breathe Easy Shower Cubes Recipe
- 1 Cup Cornstarch
- 2 tbsp solid unrefined coconut oil
- 2 tbsp water
- ice cube tray/silicone mold
- glass mixing bowl
- 20 drops DoTERRA Breathe Essential Oil–(contains Laurel Leaf, Eucalyptus Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Cardamom Seed, Ravintsara Leaf essential oils) ahhhhh!
- Blue/Green food coloring (optional)
In a glass mixing bowl combine the cornstarch, coconut oil, and essential oil. Mix together, it will take a few minutes for the coconut oil to warm up and begin to combine with the cornstarch. Add in the water and continue to mix. You want a fairly thick paste to form. You may need to add a touch more of water–add a splash at a time as this is the best way to ensure you don’t get too much. You can now add in a drop or two of the food coloring (if you choose) until you achieve your desired color. Now press your paste into the tray/mold and place them in the freezer until they are firm. Pop the cubes out and place them into a jar. You are now ready to feel your sinuses open or package them up as a gift! Simply place one cube in the shower under warm/hot water and let your senses thank you. You may want to place the cube in a dish to prevent the shower surface from getting slippery. All ingredients are safe to wash down the drain.
We also used them another way that worked really well. Pour a large mug of hot water and add in one cube. Sit under a blanket or large towel (as a canopy) with the mug and breathe in the sinus-opening vapors. Place the remaining cubes in the freezer for later use.

During a recent trip to Canada, we had the opportunity to visit a wheatgrass farm in Stouffville, Ontario. This wheatgrass farm has been in operation since 1972. That is longer than I have been alive! Already having some knowledge and a love for wheatgrass, I was amazed at just how much more there was for me to learn about the long list of health benefits.
Janice and Tom Stem, owners, opened their home and their hearts to us. This family is passionate about what they do. Hot and sweaty, straight off the combine, Mr, Stem shook hands with each of us and expressed his gratitude for our interest in his crop. We quickly connected as he joked with me about my southern accent that he instantly knew. Tom Stem was born in NC and one of the small towns here, Stem, NC, was named after his grandfather. Small world, eh? All true Canadians say “eh”.
This more than organic crop is field grown from heirloom seed, pesticide/herbacide/chemical free, non-GMO, and tested gluten-free. Once harvested, this wheatgrass is immediately processed. The juicing is done in a single continuous process in a closed system, atmosphere free meaning the juice cannot be degraded through oxidation. This juice is raw, living and bio-active; no pasteurization, pascalization or irradiation of the juice. The juice is frozen using liquid nitrogen stored at −320 °F which helps to maintain all nutrients.
This gracious family made us all a fresh glass of wheatgrass to enjoy while we talked for a bit. I found a deeper love for something I already had a thing for. The work is not easy. The equipment must be constantly maintained. Sometimes the weather doesn’t play fair. Boy do I have a new appreciation for this crop and for this family. Years ago they saw the benefits of this crop firsthand and decided to perfect their craft. They exceeded our expectations. We are drinking our wheatgrass juice every day. It has only been a little over two weeks, and we can already feel the increase in our energy levels. That alone seals the deal for me!

When is the last time you were completely alone with yourself in a dark room with nothing? Nothing at all? With only your breath and your mind?
I spent 60 full minutes floating alone in a float tank with perfectly heated water at 93.5 degrees with 1100 lbs of dissolved Epsom Salt. Epsom Salt is very detoxifying. I typically soak in an Epson Salt bath several times a week. It is a great way for the body to absorb magnesium and it aids in pain relief. This quantity of Epsom Salt creates buoyancy that is twice that of the Dead Sea. My body was literally floating with no effort of my own. I have never experienced anything remotely close to this experience. Many of us have imagined or dreamed of “floating on a cloud”. This must be what it would feel like … if that were possible.
Before entering this heavenly float environment, I showered to remove any dirt and oils. You can choose to wear a swimsuit, or opt for your birthday suit. Ear plugs are provided. I entered the float tank which was dimly lit and closed the door behind me. I laid in the pool of warm water in complete silence and turned the light off. Complete darkness. Complete silence. With only my mind, my body, and my breath.
I had to work to turn off the many thoughts that seemed to pop into my brain when I was wanting so badly to embrace the quiet. I can be guilty of focusing on what needs to get done and allow myself to be consumed by my to-do list. There is a time when we need to displace the anxiety that piles up from being so busy and feeling like we have so much that still needs to be done. We fail to enjoy the here and now because we keep thinking about what’s next.
So to end the racing thoughts in my mind I began to count at the speed of my breath from 0 to 300. This did eventually calm my brain and I cannot recall what number I made it to. I can recall seeing colors but no real thoughts entered my head for some period of time. I could eventually hear my breath fill my lungs and exit as I inhaled and exhaled.
Finding words to express this experience is challenging because it truly does not compare to anything else.
The feeling of letting go of my body and allowing the water to hold me up was beyond relaxing. After a while you cannot tell where your skin ends and the water begins. The concept of time was non-existent. I had no idea if I had been floating for 10 minutes or 50 during the float.
My areas of chronic tightness began to feel almost like a burn during my float. My neck and my shoulders realized they didn’t need to support me here. The repetitive movements from my everyday work, the tightness from life’s stresses, and the aches that creep in as the birthdays pass quickly by (and they do fly by!), were faded in that bubble, for my hour. Completely.
Oh that bubble! Since my float, I find myself thinking of all the clients, friends, family, and neighbors, that would be amazed by this experience. I think of those who would truly feel the benefit of this escape. It’s healing in so many ways. It’s pure peace unlike peace you have known. It’s quiet and darkness in a safe sea that is beyond comforting. In a world where we are all overstimulated by the noises, and devices, and universal chaos, this floating experience is the nothingness we all could stand to have a piece of.
With a passion for proactive self care & wellness, I see far beyond the obvious benefits of floating in a float tank/pod. I find myself wishing this had a different name because so many people will associate this to simply “floating in a pool” and it is so very different than that.
Two days post float, I called to see if I could go back. It was that great! Unfortunately, the float tanks were booked. But, if you find yourself in Mt.Pleasant, SC, I highly recommend Glowspa for a float session. It is a must!
The dream is pulsating through every ounce of my body that floating therapy will one day be available in the Burlington area. This is a topic I have been researching and reading about for a long time. With an innate passion for proactive self care, I love sharing my love for wellness related products, services, and therapies.
